On a visit home earlier this summer, I made a point to stop in to visit one of the local yarn stores: The Nest Yarn Store in Bridgeport, West Virginia. I hadn’t been to The Nest before, so this was a treat.

Getting There

The store is easy to find and has plenty of parking. It has its own entrance on the side, but you can also access the store via an entrance in another store, Artworks, which has unique items all of its own. I recommend browsing Artworks and then making your way into The Nest.

Blue and Gold Yarn

One of the unique things about this store is the focus on Blue and Gold yarn! If you know anything about West Virginia, you know that just about everyone loves the WVU Mountaineers and they rock the Blue and Gold all year long. So, yarn in blue and gold is a hot seller! The Nest has a section devoted to blue and gold yarns perfect for any WVU fan project.

Take Me Home Yarn

I do have to take a moment to mention their special collection, Take Me Home,  inspired by the colors of West Virginia. This WV girl can’t get enough of the colors and the unique names. You can read about the how the collection came together on their blog. I think it is so wonderful to have a special collection only available from your local yarn shop. What a great idea!

Love of Yarn

During my visit, around 5 or 6 women were there working at the long center table and the owner was helping and chatting with everyone. The atmosphere was perfect for a day or knitting or crocheting with friends.

My favorite part of my visit came just as I was about to leave. The delivery company showed up with two huge boxes. All the women at the table stood up and came over to look. The owner slit open the boxes and then stepped back to let the women take the first look at the new yarn coming in. I think that speaks to the heart of a local yarn store…it is truly about the love of yarns and sharing that love with others.

How to Support Your Local Yarn Shop

Rose and I will be featuring different yarn shops that we visit. We love local yarn shops and we want them to succeed. Yes, we order yarn online and buy at chain stores too, but nothing compares to seeing all the independent dyers’ yarn and squishing in person!

  • Visit often and take your yarn friends
  • Follow the shop on social media and share their posts with your friends
  • Buy from them – if you see something online, ask if they can order it or have something like it
  • Go there to work on a project – it is so much fun to see what everyone is working on
  • Take a class
  • Participate in any trunk shows or product information sessions
  • Going out-of-town? Do a quick search and visit any local yarn shops on the way or at your destination.

Love The Nest! I live out of state now, but love to stop by there when I come home for a visit. It’s heaven for any MadTosh lover (which my LYS doesn’t carry, boo). They have a wonderful selection, and there’s a French cafe right next door, too.

Ah yes! We didn’t have time to stop at the cafe, but what a great combination!

The Nest is my favourite yarn shop. I am from West Virginia but now live in South Carolina, I go home to visit family about four times a year and as soon as i get there, my sister and I head for The Nest.
