Have you always wanted to learn how to crochet? Let me help you with these step-by-step crochet tutorials!

Crochet is a wonderful art form and hobby and once you get the hang of it, you will be “hooked”.

Crochet is also a wonderful way to bond with a child or friend too. So, grab a friend or your child, some yarn, and a hook and let’s get started!

Materials Needed

  • Susan Bates J or K sized Hook
  • Red Heart Love Premium, Caron Simply Soft, or I Love This Yarn – in a light color
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

Crochet Hooks for Beginners

Just start with a simple hook from your local craft store. Once you start crocheting more and trying different yarns, then you can experiment with different hooks and see what you like the best.

For brand new crocheters, I always recommend a Susan Bates hook because it is easy to hold and it grabs the yarn a little better than some of the other styles. These are inexpensive hooks that you can find at most craft stores.

Let’s start with a size K hook. I recommend a K hook because it is big enough to see clearly and works with a lot of different yarns, but it isn’t too big to make your project loose and hard to work with.

Yarn Choices for Beginners

When choosing your first yarns to work with, I recommend an inexpensive yarn like Red Heart Love Premium or Caron Simply Soft. These yarns are easy to find and are soft and easy to work with.

Another important step is to choose a light color yarn to work with as you are learning. You want a color that you can see clearly and that will make it easy to see the stitches. So, choose a light color or a pastel version of a color to get started.
