Half double crochet stitches are the foundation of many crochet projects, but sometimes a project needs just a little more drape…enter the extended half double crochet stitch.
The extended half double crochet stitch gives just a little more height to the row and adds a bit more flexibility and drape to the fabric in comparison with the denser and smaller half double crochet.
This is an easy stitch to work and add to your crochet stitch toolkit! Especially for those half double crochet lovers!
Use my written and video tutorial below to learn how to crochet the extended half double crochet stitch.

To Make a Sample Swatch
Ch 17
Row 1: 1 exhdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 exhdc in each st across, turn.
Row 2: Ch 2, 1 exhdc in first st and each st across, turn.
Row 3 + : Repeat Row 2.
Helpful Tips:
- Monitor your tension to keep the look of the stitch the same throughout the row.
- Because of the slight height difference, watch mixing this in with regular hdc in the same row..it can push out the exhdc a little.
- This looks great with a mix of rows of hdc and then exhdc.
