My family came to visit me for the holidays and my mom picked out some yarn she liked for me to crochet something for her. She wanted a longer scarf that she could wrap around her neck and cover her mouth and nose if the wind was blowing. So, after some trial and error, I settled on creating a quick crochet back loop only scarf. This is a free crochet scarf pattern that would be great for beginners.

The beauty of this scarf is in the bulky yarn and subtle striping that the back loop technique provides! My mom loved it and the Lion Brand Thick & Quick is always a great choice to make something warm and cozy.

This scarf uses the back loop only technique that Rose demonstrated in this back loop only tutorial.  The tutorial provides a full overview and practice for learning how to crochet in the back loop only. We have included the video below as well, but visit the post for all the details.

Materials:

  • Lion Brand Thick & Quick – I used the Fossil colorway
  • Size N Hook

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • dc-blo – double crochet back loop only
  • dc-flo –  double crochet front loop only
  • sl st – slip stitch

There is no gauge for this scarf, just chain as many as you want to make the scarf the length you want. Bulkier yarns will have less chains overall.

Tips and Other Ideas

  • If you want this wider or longer, just increase the original chain to make longer, or increase rows to make wider.
  • Remember that you are switching from back to front loop with each row.
  • The slip stitch at the end finishes the piece and matches the original chain on the other side.

This is a super quick pattern to work up and the back loop/front loop makes it look great on either side and provides a cute striping effect and a little extra texture.
