My family came to visit me for the holidays and my mom picked out some yarn she liked for me to crochet something for her. She wanted a longer scarf that she could wrap around her neck and cover her mouth and nose if the wind was blowing. So, after some trial and error, I settled on creating a quick crochet back loop only scarf. This is a free crochet scarf pattern that would be great for beginners.
This scarf uses the back loop only technique that Rose demonstrated in this tutorial.
Lion Brand Thick & Quick
Size N Hook
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
dc-blo – double crochet back loop only
dc-flo – double crochet front loop only
sl st – slip stitch
There is no gauge for this scarf, just chain as many as you want to make the scarf the length you want. Bulkier yarns will have less chains overall.
Crochet Back Loop Only Scarf Pattern
Ch __ (how many you need to make it the length you want)
Row 1 – dc in third stitch from hook, 1 dc in each stitch
Row 2 – ch 3 – turn work – dc-blo in each stitch across
Row 3 – ch 3 – turn work – dc-flo in each stitch across
Rows 4 – 5 – repeat row 2 and 3
Row 6 – sl st into back loop only in each stitch across
Weave in ends.
- If you want this wider or longer, just increase the original chain to make longer, or increase rows to make wider.
- Remember that you are switching from back to front loop with each row.
- The slip stitch at the end finishes the piece and matches the original chain on the other side.
This is a super quick pattern to work up and the back loop/front loop makes it look great on either side and provides a cute striping effect and a little extra texture.
