Crochet and Knitting Building Block

Building Blocks

Welcome to our Crochet and Knitting Building Block Series!

The Plan

Every week we’ll be sharing a Crochet and Knitting Building Block post featuring a different stitch. The focus of these building blocks is to improve your crocheting and knitting skills by completing quick blocks. By making these blocks you will gain knowledge and experience to get you out of your comfort zone and help you feel inspired to try other projects and stitches.

What We Will Share

These posts will include photos, how to instructions, and helpful tips and reminders. Plus, they will showcase different techniques and stitches you will be able to add to your repertoire of crochet/knit skills. We’ll share links and resources that will help you to make these blocks and learn the featured stitch/technique. You may find it useful to purchase a crochet or knit stitch collection book as a reference tool. We love and recommend 500 Crochet Stitches and 750 Knitting Stitches.

From time to time we’ll pick different blocks to be used in a sample project to give you ideas of what you can make with all your blocks. Feel free to send us pictures and ideas of projects you create using these blocks too! We’d love to feature your finished projects on our blog.

What You’ll Need

  • Crochet and Knitting Building Block

    What you’ll need

Worsted or medium weight yarn in a solid color (preferably light colored for beginners) – We use Simply Soft by Caron.

  • Crochet Hook/Knitting Needles to obtain 7×7 inch block before border
  • Measuring Tape
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle

Keep in Mind

For the sake of consistency, our crochet and knitting building block series will all have borders. The blocks are 8″ x 8″ after the border has been added. They may be used interchangeably with a variety of project ideas. We will use Simply Soft by Caron, a worsted medium weight yarn that comes in a variety of colors. Of course you are more than welcome to use yarn and color of your own choosing as well as size and weight of yarn and needles/hooks.

Where to Find Everything

Our crochet and knitting building blocks can be found here and the knitting ones here so you may access them at any time. We welcome any suggestions or requests on stitches and techniques you’d like to learn. Feel free to email us on what’d you like to see!

Please note: While these blocks are designed and chosen with a beginner crocheter/knitter in mind, the assumption is made that you already know the basics of both crafts. We will be offering other tutorials and videos as well as classes for those people who are brand new to the crafts of knitting and crochet. Intermediate and advanced crocheters and knitters are also welcome!

I just found this website this morning and I am really excited about it. My mother taught me to crochet about 55 years ago (I’m 67). She made such beautiful things over her lifetime. Many I still have today. I’ve taught for elementary school for 40 years and didn’t do much crocheting (now that I’m old I need to relearn typing again one finger just doesn’t do it.) I hope to relearn old skills and add more skills. I am between easy and beginner.

Welcome, Rose! So happy you found us! Let us know how we can help! I would probably recommend you start with the back loop only crochet scarf as a beginner pattern here. It is an easy one with the basic stitches. Stay in touch and let us know how you are doing! 🙂
