The Courage Headband/Cowl was created as part of the Crochet Cancer Challenge to help crocheters make and donate crochet hats for cancer patients and their caregivers.

This pattern was designed for Prostate Cancer patients and caregivers and features the pique stitch. It is quick to crochet and you can make several from one skein of yarn.

The headband is warm and cozy and can then be pulled down as a quick cowl to keep the wind off your neck.

Now, are you ready to put your crochet skills to work making a hat to support cancer patients and survivors in your community?

This year, I am a participating designer in the Crochet Cancer Challenge and I couldn’t be more excited to help support friends and family who are dealing with cancer.

You can read more about the challenge at that link or below, but the general idea is that to get this free pattern, you have to pledge to make one to donate to a cancer patient or survivor near you.

It can be anyone, we just want to share and spread the love and the hope for a cure!

Each designer in the challenge has chosen a different type of cancer as an inspiration and dedication.

Courage Headband/Cowl

My design is in support of those dealing with Prostate Cancer. My family has been affected by a prostate cancer diagnosis in the last year and I wanted to lend my support to all those men affected and the women who love and support them.

Prostate Cancer patients are often on medications and therapies that affect their testosterone and many men end up with hot flashes as a result.

I didn’t want to design a full hat that would be too hot and not get as much wear. So, the Courage Headband was born!

The headband is meant to throw on quickly to keep your ears warm, but not be too warm and when you need to, you can quickly pull it down off your head and just wear it as a cowl.

Or if you get a little too hot, it folds up nicely to fit in a pocket or bag.

I hope you will enjoy working up this quick pattern and pledge to donate a hat or this headband too!

I must also take this opportunity to shout out the team at the Johns Hopkins Prostate Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic. They are an outstanding facility with outstanding doctors and nurses.
